Special Education Director Job Summary: 
The Special Education Director will administer, coordinate, and lead the special education program for APA Las Vegas.  The Special Education Director will oversee special education instruction designed to meet state of Nevada as well as federal standards for special education students at APA Las Vegas.  The Special Education Director will ensure all students are in an educational atmosphere that encourages effective student learning.  The Special Education Director will be expected to adhere to APA Las Vegas’ professional standards as well as Nevada Department of Education licensure standards.  APA Las Vegas is a classical education charter school located in the southwest area of Las Vegas.  APA Las Vegas has a current K-12 campus and is opening a second K-6 campus in fall of 2020.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
Interviews, hires, and manages special education teachers and program staff
Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive


Provide leadership, supervision and direction to Special Education case managers, teachers and support staff
Develops and executes a special education program that focuses on integration, inclusion, and learning opportunities for all students
Ensures that policies and procedures are implemented and performed in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations
Drafts, maintains, and implements policies and procedures for every aspect of a successful special education program including evaluation, placement, and individualized education and training
Ensure the receipt of all services required, pursuant to the Individual Education Program (IEP)
Meets and collaborates with departmental staff on a regular basis to assess progress of programs and initiatives, participates in short and long-range planning, and addresses and resolves problems
Communicates with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders to explain educational programs and to answer questions
Builds and maintains relationships in the community to foster understanding of and support for special education programs
Drafts, proposes, and presents budgets and reports to the Executive Director
Attends and participates in regular staff and administrative meetings
Works cooperatively with Executive Director regarding compliance issues and provide necessary support to remedy the non-compliance
Maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations related to special education
Performs other related duties as required

Thorough understanding of pedagogy and various implementation options
Thorough understanding of best practices related to special education
Thorough understanding of laws and regulations related to special education
Creative analytical and problem-solving skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Classroom or related software


Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and Nevada Special Education License required, Master’s degree preferred
At least five (5) years experience in special education, preferably in a supervisory role
Working knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) required


Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
Must be able to traverse school facility to observe students and staff in classrooms
