Letter to Parents About School Opening

Dear Families,

On June 24, 2020 the Nevada Department of Education provided “Nevada’s Path Forward:

A Framework for a Safe, Efficient, and Equitable Return to School Buildings” (Nevada Path Forward Framework).  This 47 page guide provides recommendations that we will use to determine the safest return to campus for the 2020-2021 school year this fall.  Below, you will find a summary of the information referenced within that framework.  We send this information to you to keep you informed, and in the coming days, we will seek your input to help us finalize our plan for the fall.

In the Path Forward Distance Education Guidance Memo 20-05, the Nevada Department of Education states,

…charter schools will be required to adhere to emergency directives, public health protocols, and NDE guidance throughout the 2020-21 school year. While directives, protocols, and guidance may evolve to reflect changes in public health conditions, at any point in time the prevailing guidance will need to be upheld. Therefore, districts/schools should plan to reopen in the fall under Phase 2 social distancing and public health protocols, which are reflected in the Framework for a Safe, Efficient, and Equitable Return to School Buildings.”

Nevada’s current “Phase II” guidelines include, but are not limited to:

  • Face covering requirements
  • 6ft of social distancing
  • No room filled to more than half of its capacity
    • Typical classroom capacity at our school is 40 people
  • No more than 50 people in a single room despite larger capacities
  • Specific regular cleaning requirements

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) also encourages instituting policies regarding:

Considerations for Schools

  • Regular hand washing and hand sanitizing
  • Not touching your face
  • Special accommodations for “high risk” staff and students
  • Health and temperature screenings for every person who enters the school
  • Limit of daily transitions in the hallways
  • Limit “mixing” groups of students
  • Keep student supplies and belongings separate from one another
  • Eating and food safety protocols

As you can see there are a lot of parameters and requirements for us to consider when finalizing our reopening plan.  Please be assured that we are doing our best to ensure the equitable learning for all students.  We love them and miss seeing them on campus.  We look forward to having everyone back in the fall.  Please watch for more information to come.
